English translation
Many years ago, so gradually that I can fix no definite date, religion began to dawn upon me as a rational experience. It was not some ancient or medieval obscurantist message, received upon external authority and held in a watertight compartment of my being, apart from the rest of life. It was rather a spirit that must infuse the whole of life.
